NYSE Now Open 24 Hours a Day!
Think of the possibilities. Think of the changes this would bring.
Trading stocks 24/7 would equally have its perks and problems. The other day, I was thinking that since the Foreign Currency Exchange or FOREX was 24/7/365 what would the current face of financial trading look like here in the US if both the Nasdaq and NYSE were online and open for business all day long!
Unfortunately, we would not having the closing bell tradition nor would we have intra day charts and whatnot. Also, how would they add IPO’s to the exchange? There’s no doubt in my mind that this has been discussed before but never on a serious level.
A while back, the WSJ published an article about the always live Forex market, so that got me thinking about how news outlets, newspapers, and brokerages would handle this. Conclusion: They couldn’t.
Brokerages would have to stay open all day long and the markets would be a lot more unstable as news breaks all day long and there would be little to no time for anyone or any company to take a break and re-coup for the next day’s trading cycle. Earning’s reports would have to be released on a set time throughout the day.
The final ruling- Not going to happen, but it would be exciting to test it our for a week or so.
Thoughts?
